Welcome to the summer 2006 edition of cny kids!

Dirt Dessert

Ingredients:
Oreo cookies (crushed)
Chocolate pudding (make it ahead of time)
Cool Whip
Gummy Worms

Directions:
Make it in a sand pail and use the shovel to serve it!
Layer crushed oreo cookies, chocolate pudding, and coolwhip in the pail. Make sure to top with the cookies and place gummy worms on the top! You can also use brownies instead of the oreo cookies.
Alternative: If you want sand instead of dirt use any vanilla sandwich cookie or blonde brownies, vanilla pudding and coolwhip! Add gummy whales or eels or chocolate sea shells for a beach theme!

Watermelon Ice

Ingredients:
4 c Watermelon, cubed, seeded
1/3 c Granulated Sugar
1/2 c Water
2 tb Lime Juice, fresh

Directions:
In a small saucepan, combine sugar and water; bring to a boil and cook until sugar is dissolved, about 1 - 2 minutes. Or, place sugar and water in a 2-cup glass measure. Microwave at High for 2 - 3 minutes or until liquid comes to a boil, stirring once to dissolve the sugar. Let cool. Puree the watermelon in a food processor or blender until smooth; place in a bowl along with sugar syrup and lime juice. Pour into an 8-inch square baking dish. Freeze until nearly solid, about 2 hours. Scoop mixture into a food processor or blender and beat until mixture is smooth, but not melted. Spoon into dishes and serve immediately. Serves 4.

While Mom is busy in her garden...you can create your own!

Crystal Gardens

6 tb Salt
6 tb Liquid bluing
6 tb Water
1 tb Ammonia

Combine salt, bluing, water and ammonia. Pour over small pieces of rock or coal in a shallow GLASS or CHINA bowl. Drip food coloring on top if desire. Crystals will begin to grow soon. Add water occasionally to keep crystals growing. You'll probably want to place dish on tray or wooden board as crystals grow over the sides of the bowl.

Face Or Body Paint

1/4 c Baby lotion
ds Liquid detergent
Powdered tempera paint

Mix the three ingredients together, using as much color as necessary for the desired result.
Using a paintbrush, paint designs on the body or face, usually the cheek or hand is painted.
MOMPaint washes off easily, due to the detergent added.

Chain Hide and Seek

This is an easy and wild hide and seek variation. "It" counts to 50 while everyone hides. When the first child is found, he takes "It's" hand and goes with him to find the others. Each child joins the chain as he is found.

Four Square

Equipment: Heavy-duty rubber playground ball, driveway or concrete space for a 10-ft. square, chalk

Play: Draw off a 10-ft. square with the chalk, then divide into 4 even squares. Number them 1-4, going clockwise. Draw a diagonal line in 1's box, to be the serving spot. 1 serves by bouncing the ball into any of the three boxes, trying to prevent that player from bouncing it back in his box. If the player returns the ball, he stays, and the 1 player is out. If not, that player is out. The next player moves into the 4 box, and the players move up. The object of the game is to move up to the 1 box, and stay there.

Sun Prints
Supply the child with a dark piece of paper. In the morning, on a very sunny day, with little or no wind, have the children find items to place on their paper. Every child should recieve one rock, to keep the paper from blowing away. Have the children arrange sticks, grass, acorns and such on the paper. At the end of the day see how the sun made a picture for them.

Sponge Relay
Divide the children into teams. Each child stands with their team in a line with one child in front of the next. The first child in line is the leader. Each team will need two different sized buckets and one sponge. (It would help if each team had their own color of buckets and sponge). Set the large buckets at the start line, these are filled with water. The second set of buckets should be smaller and are set at the finish line, empty. Each child will in turn take the sponge from the start bucket and run to the finish bucket and squeeze it into that bucket and run back. The child gives the sponge to the next child in line and returns to the end of their line. the next child dips the bear sponge into the start water bucket and repeats. The first team to fill their bucket with water wins. Children may have many turns in order to fill the buckets up.
