American Cancer Society Relay For Life Comes to Mohawk Valley

The day of diagnosis is often the darkest day of a cancer patient's life. The questions come flooding in, Who will take care of me? Who will take care of my family? How could this happen to me? Am I strong enough to survive?

Then there is Relay For Life - a day when a cancer survivor recognizes the support and hope that come from seeing an entire community rally around one cause… finding the cure for a dreadful disease.

For years, people have given money to help find a cure for cancer.  This money, a dollar here, two dollars there, has helped make leaps and bounds in the fight against this disease.  It is because of the power of Relay For Life that cancer patients have the hope to carry on.

Relay For Life is not a new event; in fact it is one of the nation's most established and well-known community celebrations.  The largest grassroots fundraiser in the world is not just a fundraiser, it is a lifesaver.  It's not about the amount of money raised, but about the millions of husbands, wives, sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, friends and neighbors saved.

1 in every 100 Americans currently participates in this monumental event and it has become a cultural movement across the United States.  Numbers alone don't really tell the story, though. The looks on the faces of the individuals walking the track hand in hand – some in victory, some feeling great loss – illustrate why Relay For Life is a beacon of hope for families who have stared cancer in the face.

By 2015, the American Cancer Society aims to prevent 5 million additional deaths from cancer, avoid 6 million new cancer diagnoses and measurably improve the quality of life for those with the disease. The support of 4,500 Relay For Life communities across the nation will make this possible.

Relay For Life returns to the Mohawk Valley this year on June 11 – 12.  Each event will feature a celebration of life as survivors open the Relay by walking the first lap around the track.  A survivor reception will honor all survivors in the community.  At nightfall, each event will hold a luminaria ceremony.  Lit candles will line the track, each one bearing the name of someone who has faced cancer.  Some are still with us, others have passed on.  All will be remembered, and honored for their fight.
